Contractor Training and Quality Control, Remote Monitoring of Cathodic Protection Systems, StructureView®, System Maintenance and Management

Project Description

VCS performed installation quality control, supplied and installed monitoring stations, and performed data analysis for galvanic cathodic protection systems installed on 10 bridges in Ohio DOT’s District 7.

Project Issue

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), like many states, performs substructure rehabilitation on various structures throughout the state.  As part of their maintenance strategy, ODOT includes galvanic cathodic protection of bridge abutments as a cost-effective means to extend the life of existing structures.  As per ODOT requirements, a NACE Certified Cathodic Protection Specialist was required to train the contractors in installation of  the GCP systems and to install and the anode monitoring stations.

Project Solution

VCS provided a NACE Certified Cathodic Specialist (CP-4) to conduct on-site installation QC and installation of the monitoring stations. VCS instructed the various contractors and DOT personnel on proper installation of the galvanic anodes and installed manual monitoring stations on each abutment.  VCS also installed instrumentation monitoring stations on select structures so that the performance of the CP systems could be tracked with time. Monitoring of the systems is intended to provide ODOT with an accurate determination of the anode’s service life, verify the effectiveness of the system, inform ODOT design procedures, and verify proper performance.
