Project Description

The Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a racetrack hosting the F1 event in UAE and other races throughout the year.  Yas Marina Circuit opened in 2009 and is located right on the waterfront in Abu Dhabi, putting it right on the Persian Gulf. Yas Marina Circuit has several reinforced concrete tunnels underneath the racetrack that allow spectators and vehicles to get to either side during a race.  Due to the aggressive environment corrosion of the steel reinforcement in the tunnels is occurring.  To stop this corrosion and preserve the service life of the tunnels the owner requested that a cathodic protection system be installed in the tunnels to mitigate corrosion.

Project Solution

The contractor, VSL, put together a design/build team to install an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system.  As part of this team, an independent reviewer for the ICCP system was required.  VSL hired VCS Engineering as the peer reviewer for the ICCP design and drawings.

VCS reviewed all design calculations and drawings developed by the ICCP designer and provided feedback and analysis of the approach for the ICCP system.  VCS was able to provide the owner reassurance that the system being installed by VSL was going to meet the project requirements and provide corrosion mitigation for the intended service life.
